Home Get Started HSA Basics Use Your Money FAQs "How-To" Video

HSAs can be set up in one of two ways. Start the process on the member website. First-time users will need to register for a login ID and password.

Open a New Account

  • Look on the Spending tab for the message: “Want to Open a New Account?”
  • Click on the Open an HSA button and follow the instructions to set up your HSA.

Complete the Setup of an Existing Account

If you don’t see “Want to Open a New Account?” then your HSA was started for you.

  • You will still need to complete the setup process.
  • Click on the Spending tab and look for your HSA balance and deposit details.

Next Steps for Both Options

When you see your balance and deposit information on the Spending tab, you can begin to use your HSA. Next you must:

  • Accept the Terms and Conditions
  • Adjust the settings using the Spending Account Settings link to:
    • Add or change beneficiaries
    • Sign up for direct deposit

While you are on the website, click on the Your Account link at the upper right of the home page. Select Account Settings from the drop-down menu to:

  • Review and update your contact information
  • Sign up for email notices about statements and payments from your HSA

Why is my HSA not opened?

Due to federal rules, it may take some time to set up your account—even if your new health plan began on the first of the month. The bank that has your HSA, called a “custodian,” must do a security check, which may cause a delay.

If you don’t see your HSA information, check back in a few days. Your account setup may still be under way.

If you receive a letter asking for documents to confirm your identity, submit them promptly. You may need to submit a copy of your driver’s license, birth certificate or tax documents. The fastest and easiest way to do this is to upload the documents to your member website on the Spending tab. The security check will not continue until you submit the requested documents, and your HSA will not be available until the security check is complete.

Will you mail me information about my new account?

Watch for two envelopes that will be mailed to your home. One is your HSA Welcome Kit, which will provide your new account number and detailed information about your account. A plain business envelope containing your new debit card and instructions on how to use it will be mailed separately.

How do I manage my account?

Everything you need to manage your health care spending, including your HSA, is on your member website and can be accessed from your computer or any mobile device. In one convenient location you can:

  • View your HSA balance
  • Contribute to your account
  • Pay a care provider directly from the account
  • Enter claims to be paid back for expenses you paid out of your own pocket
  • View deposits, transactions and claims
  • Track your health care costs
  • Make investments once your balance reaches $500
  • Request additional debit cards for your spouse or dependents
  • Look up typical care costs using Cost Saving tools
  • Use the HSA calculator to see the power of pre-tax savings

How do I designate a beneficiary?

A beneficiary is the person or entity you designate to receive the proceeds (death benefit) from your HSA upon your death. You can easily name or change your beneficiary by logging into your member website. Go to the Spending tab, select the Spending Account Settings link and then click on Edit Beneficiaries.

How do I order more debit cards?

You can have up to four debit cards on your account. Your first debit card will be mailed to you automatically. If you’d like additional debit cards, you can request up to three more for you and your family at no additional charge. Because the cards are personalized, you’ll need to provide the names of the dependents who will be receiving the cards. Log into your member website and click the Spending tab, then the Debit Card link.
